RETAKE POLICY 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

Good Afternoon Parents, 9/23/2019

Attached is some of the work your child has done over the past three weeks. Normally, after an item is graded, I return it right away instead of sending home a large packet of papers, but as this is the first time I wanted to explain some things about my retake policy. Please have a conversation with your child about bringing papers home when they get them and stress that my retake policy is a courtesy, but will not extend beyond the parameters I set.

Retake Policy Math - Mrs. Kelley

Tests/In-Class Assignments- When I offer students the chance to retake one of these items, they will complete them IN CLASS. The second score they receive (if it is better) will erase their first score. So, if a child earns a 45/F on a test, redoes it after some reteaching and earns an 85/B, they will keep the B.

Graded Work Sent Home- A child that earns a D (60-69) or F(59 or below) and the papers are sent home, the student has  one week from the time the paper was sent to:

  • Get it signed.

  • Redo the assignment on another sheet of paper (DO NOT ERASE ORIGINAL WORK!)

  • Turn it in to me.

If your child does those three things and their score improves, they will move up one letter grade. Meaning, if they had an F they will get the D, if they had a D they will get a C.

My retake policy is in place to help students succeed after a failure, I do my best to reteach after a student has struggled and give them opportunities to bring up their grade. If a child doesn’t take advantage of that option within the parameters, their grade will stay the same.  I do not give extra credit.

Your child _____________ ‘s current math average is _______. This can improve if they take advantage of this policy and redo any D or F work attached.

Please Sign the slip below and detach it so you can keep a copy of this Policy. It will also be posted on the school website.

Thank You,

Megan Kelley

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have received a copy of Mrs. Kelley’s Retake Policy and have discussed it with my child. I understand that work redone in the classroom will receive the highest grade my child earns and that take home work will receive one grade higher if the student work has improved.  I have also discussed with my child that they must bring items home when they are passed out so that retakes can get done within the one week deadline. Lastly, I understand that there will be no extra credit given.

WELCOME LETTER 3rd-5th Grade MATH MRS. KELLEY

Dear Parents,     September 3, 2019

To all new families and 3rd grade families I would like to welcome you and your child to my Math classroom.  For my returning 4th graders and 5th graders, I welcome you back! It’s an adjustment to have three teachers, but I believe that students will see the love that Mrs. Houze, Mrs. Daniel,  and I have for our assigned subjects and will adjust quickly.

About Me:

This is my seventh year at Kipling, my nineteenth year in CPS, and my 24th year of teaching. I was born and raised in Chicago, went to the University of Iowa, and then moved to Houston where I taught for six years. I moved back to Chicago in 2001. I live in Morgan Park with my husband, 3 year old daughter and our three dogs. My son, who is 19 has moved on to college.

About Math:

When I was a student, I was taught that there was only one way to solve a problem, now I know that isn’t true. So, with your child, I will approach math with an open mind. I will guide them through strategies to solve problems, but allow them to drive discussion because many times students find a new way to look at or solve a problem that works for them. I want to fill their math toolbox with as many possible ways to solve a problem as I can. When they ask for help with homework and tell you, “that isn’t the way Mrs. Kelley does it”, it’s okay. Make them try your way, it might work better for them.  It will not be easy, but my hope is that your child, whether they already love math or not will leave this year feeling more confident in the subject.

About City Year:

Your child may mention Ms. Carla, Ms. Posley, or Ms. Green in your conversations. This ladies are Student Support Volunteers from a program called City Year. They will be with us all year helping to support the students in and outside of the classroom. We are very excited to have them with us.

About Communication:

As a parent myself, I like to have an idea what is going on in my child’s classroom. Unfortunately, all kids do not share the good, bad, and ugly of their school day. I try very hard to give you information about what is going on so you can ask them questions about what they are learning and they know that we are communicating. Soon, you will be getting information about signing up for Remind. Please follow the instructions and sign up ASAP. This program allows you to receive updates/texts from me via your cell phone or email. It doesn’t share your number with me; all it does is allow me to send out class wide updates. It also allows you to text a response or question in real time. I try and send them at least once a week so you know what we are up to in the classroom. If you have questions or concerns I am easiest to reach by email at mmkelley@cps.edu, but will also contact you by phone when necessary. I also do my best to put important information on the school website, www.kiplingtigers.org. Last, there is Aspen Parent Portal that allows you to see all of your child’s grades in real time.  If you do not have a parent portal account, please let the main office know and they can walk you through the steps to set up an account.

REMIND CODES FOR MATH- Please sign your child up for their grade level math class only and use their name as the contact.  Text the corresponding code to 81010

105-5th grade @kelley105          108-4th grade @kelleym@108     106-3rd grade @kelley106

Final Thoughts:

Your child may not always like my class, I can be very tough and the work is hard, but when the year is over my hope is they will look back on it with fond thoughts of all the things they learned. Ms. Houze, Mrs. Daniel,  and I are committed to doing everything we can to help your child excel. With your partnership and support, there is no limit to the possibilities.

Thanks!

Megan Kelley Room 108

108 Homework 2/4-2/8/2019

HOMEWORK WEEK OF 2/4-2/8/2019

ROOM 108  4th Grade Math and Science

Parents this is the beginning of the second semester! Report cards go home on Friday and we have four months before testing. Many students have decided to put less effort into their work and that reflects in their grades.  Please review the following pieces of information with your child going forward as we prepare them for FIFTH GRADE!

v  At this point, your child should be fluent with their multiplication and division facts. If this is not the case, it is their responsibility to study daily. Students unable to recall basic multiplication and division facts WILL struggle with our division and fraction work going forward.

v  Late homework will only receive half credit. If your child is missing a homework assignment, they will receive a zero.

v  Dreambox requires at least 5 lessons completed a week. Students will receive a Dreambox grade EVERY week out of 5 points.

v  There will be at least one IXL assignment in class each week, this will be a graded assignment by the end of the week. If a student doesn’t finish this assignment during class, after school, or during technology their grade will reflect that incompletion.

v  Until further notice, homework will not be focused on one skill, but will be reviewing several skills each night to help students review what they have learned so far. If a student doesn’t understand a question or vocabulary they should try and research it to see if they can solve the problem. They can also get help from you. Students should attempt every problem!

v  As it was during the first semester, students will only receive two written math assignments each week. The other nights of the week have been left for technology work. If your child does not have access to a computer or internet at home, Walker Branch Library at 95th and Halsted allows students to use computers after school with a valid library card, they also offer help for homework.  In addition I allow students to use my computers during recess and when they finish assignments in class. Students that focus on getting their work done and taking responsibility for their learning have ample computer time during the school day to get their minutes in.

v  Students are given a monthly technology path sheet made specifically for them to develop their strengths and support their weaknesses. They have a copy in class as well as a personal copy they are supposed to keep in their homework folder. These assignments should be completed by the end of the month. If your child has completed these assignments, then it is their responsibility to share that with me, so I can redirect their instruction.  In IXL if a student has the assignment 3.P.7 then that means third grade, subject matter P, skill number 7. You may find your child working below grade level in some skills, on grade level in others, and above in others this is based on how they are performing on these skills in class as well as their Winter NWEA test they took in December.

v  Our all school technology challenge is in play, students are striving for 540 minutes a week. This includes weekends, nights, and school time.

v  Your child receives a copy of the homework sheet and all their work the first day of each week and I post it on the school website at kiplingtigers.org, please do not allow your child to tell you they have no homework. There is always work to be done.
