Welcome to Upper Grade Social Studies

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year in Room 120! My name is Mr. White and I am thrilled about working with you and your child in providing Social Studies instruction. There are so many new things we will learn as a team. Our classroom motto is “T.E.A.M: Together Everyone Achieves More.”  I hope you are expecting an exciting and productive academic school year for your child.

We will explore and discover that within the school’s program social science provides coordinated, systematic study of anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, political science, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences. The study of social science helps students develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public’s good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. To reach this level of comprehension there are several things that will help us achieve these goals.

Your child will need to be prepared to work when they come to school.  Your child will need the school supplies that are listed on the sheet that is enclosed with this letter.  I strongly encourage you as the parent/guardian to see that your child receives at least 8 hours of sleep at night.  It is imperative that your child is properly rested in order for them to maximize their learning opportunities.  Also, your child will need to be present everyday and on time.  I need your assistance in making sure that our child is not interrupted from their learning opportunity.  Open communication is another one of the vital components for success.

Please talk to your child daily about what he/she has learned. Feel free to schedule a time to come in and speak with me about your child’s well being and academic progress. You are welcomed to contact me at the school, 773-535-3151 or via email:   Feel free to contact me after school via my cell phone: (773) 317-0993.

Again, I’m excited about learning and working with you.  I also thank you for allowing me the privilege and honor of working with your child who I know is extremely precious to you. I know your child has the potential to excel in School and in Life, with our encouragement and their effort they can conceive the dream, they can believe the dream, and they will receive the dream. Remember, I am here to work with you.

P.S. your child will have homework every night including weekends and holidays. Ask to see it!
